A British woman who concocted a calculated scheme to falsely accuse a UK banker of rape and extort six-figure payouts has been sentenced to six years behind bars by a Hong Kong court.

Isabel Anonia Barbra Eudora Rose, 26, of Hackney, East London, was handed the prison term at the District Court following a trial that exposed a web of deceit, threats, and financial demands. Judge Adriana Noelle Tse Ching presided over the case, delivering a verdict that brought a dramatic conclusion to a two-year legal ordeal for the falsely accused man.

A Vacation Encounter Turns Sour

The sequence of events began when Rose and the victim—identified in court only as “X”—met while traveling in Thailand. Their paths crossed again in February 2024 when Rose flew to Hong Kong to meet him.

According to court findings, the pair spent the night of February 1 together, engaging in what the judiciary later confirmed were consensual intimate acts. However, in the days that followed, Rose filed a formal police report alleging she had been sexually assaulted.

The immediate fallout was severe for the unnamed banker, who was arrested by local authorities before being released without charge. A subsequent medical examination conducted at the time was inconclusive, unable to either confirm or disprove whether sexual intercourse had occurred.

The Escalating Extortion Plot

With the false investigation hanging over the banker’s head, Rose shifted her focus from the legal system to financial leverage. Shortly after filing the report, she demanded an initial payment of £5,000, which the terrified man paid.

Emboldened, Rose escalated her demands, ultimately demanding £100,000 under the explicit threat that she would return to the police and pursue the fabricated allegations if she did not receive the funds.

Investigators unraveled the plot, leading to the dismissal of the initial claims against the banker and the arrest of Rose herself. Instead of facing a victim, the courts turned their focus onto Rose, charging her with one count of blackmail and one count of perverting the course of public justice.

A Scathing Judicial Rebuke

During a six-day trial in March, the defense pointed to Rose’s clean criminal record and her vulnerable status as a foreign national stranded in Hong Kong—where she had been legally prohibited from leaving or working for the past two years—to appeal for leniency.

Judge Ching flatly rejected these arguments. Describing the victim as an “honest, credible and reliable witness,” the judge slammed Rose as “dishonest, uncredible and unreliable.” Judge Ching added that the defendant had “not shown an iota of remorse for her wicked behaviour” and noted that it was “crystal clear” she had deliberately engineered the extortion.

Rose displayed no contrition as the sentence was handed down, blowing kisses and waving to her mother in the public gallery before being led away by security personnel.

Final Sentencing Breakdown

  • Blackmail: 5-year starting sentence
  • Perverting the Course of Justice: 3-year starting sentence
  • Total Imprisonment: 6 years, factoring in consecutive service terms

Following the verdict, Rose was transferred to the Tai Lam Correctional Institution, Hong Kong’s oldest maximum-security facility for women, where she will serve her sentence.
