Abuja, Nigeria – In a significant move to uphold Igbo tradition and cultural sanctity, the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers has officially abolished the use of the title “Eze Ndigbo” (King of Igbos) for Igbo leaders residing outside Igbo land. This decision aims to clarify the sacred nature of the “Eze” title, which is exclusively reserved for recognized traditional rulers within the Southeast.
The resolution, outlined in a communique, was signed by prominent traditional rulers including His Royal Majesty, Eze (Dr.) E.C. Okeke, CFR (Eze Imo), and His Royal Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe (Leader), along with the chairmen of the Traditional Councils of Enugu, Anambra, Abia, and Ebonyi States.
The Council acknowledged the commendable efforts of Igbo leaders in the Diaspora for unifying Ndigbo and fostering peaceful coexistence with their host communities, as well as their commitment to promoting Igbo culture. However, they emphasized the need for clarity regarding the “Eze” title.
Clarifying the Title “Eze”
The Council underscored several key points:
1.The title “Eze” is a sacred traditional title specifically for recognized traditional rulers in the Southeast, sanctioned by Igbo customs, culture, and state legislation.
2.A true “Eze” is enthroned and coronated by their community or kingdom through traditional rites and ceremonies.
3.An “Eze” must govern a defined territory; the title is not honorary or symbolic.
4.The “Ofo,” a symbol of authority, is bestowed upon a traditional ruler by their people, signifying spiritual and cultural legitimacy.
5.The title of “Eze” cannot be conferred on individuals living outside Igbo communities, as it is deeply rooted in Igbo tradition and heritage, not politics or ceremony.
New Approved Title: “Onyendu Ndigbo”
To resolve the long-standing controversy surrounding the improper use of “Eze Ndigbo” outside Igbo land, the Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers has unanimously approved “Onyendu Ndigbo” (Igbo Leader in Diaspora) as the official designation for any Igbo leader in foreign lands or outside Nigeria.
All Igbo leaders in the Diaspora are now required to adopt this new title immediately for all official documents, signposts, letterheads, and public representations.
Implications of Non-Compliance
The Council stated that failure to comply with this directive, especially following a competent court ruling on the matter, will be considered a serious act of defiance, misconduct, and disregard for Igbo traditional authority and judicial pronouncements. Conversely, compliance will foster better recognition, reconciliation, and cooperation between Igbo leaders abroad and traditional and government authorities at home.
The Southeast Council of Traditional Rulers extended a hand of fellowship to all Igbo leaders abroad, urging them to embrace this resolution for the collective growth and advancement of Ndigbo, emphasizing their role as custodians of Igbo heritage.
