The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially adopted the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, as a Federal University. This decision, approved by President Bola Tinubu on March 7, 2025, follows an invitation from the Ogun State Government to take over the institution, which was established in 2005 and is recognized as Nigeria’s first specialized university of education.
As a federal institution, TASUED will be the first federally owned tertiary school in the Ogun East senatorial district. The transition is expected to require minimal federal investment due to the university’s existing infrastructure and academic programs. President Tinubu highlighted this move as a tribute to notable figures in Nigerian education, particularly Chief Obafemi Awolowo and Dr. Tai Solarin, emphasizing its strategic importance in enhancing teacher education across the country.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State praised the federal government’s decision, anticipating that it will lead to increased funding and recognition for TASUED, further solidifying Ogun State’s status as a hub for academic excellence in Nigeria. With this change, TASUED joins Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo as one of Nigeria’s three universities dedicated to teacher training.
