Elizade University has successfully hosted Dr. Babasola Fateye, an Associate Professor at Grand Valley State University, United States, under the Carnegie African Diaspora Fellowship Program (CADFP), marking the university’s second participation in this distinguished initiative aimed at enhancing academic and research capacity in Africa.
Dr. Fateye collaborated with Dr. Olayinka Osuolale from Elizade University’s Department of Biological Sciences on a dual-focused project. The research employed Galleria mellonella larvae as a cost-effective and ethical alternative to traditional animal models for toxicity testing of drugs and pathogens, a method known for reducing research costs while delivering reliable results. Additionally, they co-taught and trained students in environmental and diversity monitoring, enriching practical scientific skills and literacy.

The fellowship also included a donation of laboratory equipment from Dr. Fateye to Elizade University, reinforcing the program’s goal of sustainable capacity building. The CADFP, funded by Carnegie Corporation of New York and managed by the Institute of International Education, matches African-born scholars in the U.S. and Canada with African universities to foster research collaboration, curriculum development, and graduate mentoring.
Since its inception in 2013, the program has awarded nearly 750 fellowships, supporting visits of 14 to 90 days that cover travel, stipends, visa, and health insurance costs. Dr. Fateye praised Elizade University for its safe, serene environment and the students’ scholarly enthusiasm, while the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sunday Babatunde Adeyemo, expressed eagerness to expand such partnerships to further boost research and academic excellence.

This collaboration highlights Elizade University’s commitment to advancing innovative research and international academic partnerships to develop skilled graduates ready to address global challenges.
