Eguavoen Takes Interim Charge of Super Falcons for LA 2028 Qualifiers

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has drafted experienced technical chief Augustine Eguavoen to steer the Super Falcons on a temporary basis, filling the dugout vacuum ahead of the team’s crucial 2028 Olympic Games qualifiers.

Eguavoen, widely known as ‘Cerezo’, steps into the role immediately to oversee preparations for next month’s second-round qualifier against Comoros. His appointment comes in the wake of the NFF’s decision to dissolve the previous technical crew led by Justin Madugu following a turbulent period for the women’s national team.

Bringing extensive pedigree to the women’s setup, Eguavoen previously managed the senior men’s national team, the Super Eagles, guiding them to a respectable bronze medal finish at the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. While the search for a permanent, substantive head coach remains ongoing, the NFF has assembled a robust backroom staff to support Eguavoen through the opening hurdle.

Nasarawa Amazons head coach Christopher Danjuma has been named as assistant coach. Danjuma carries substantial pedigree within Nigeria’s female youth structures, most notably spearheading the Falconets’ campaign at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Costa Rica.

They will be joined by seasoned national team goalkeeper trainer Olatunji Baruwa, whose resume spans across the Super Eagles, CHAN Eagles, Flying Eagles, and Golden Eaglets. Adding further inspirational value to the bench is former Super Falcons stalwart Ayisat Yusuf. The ex-defender, who earned 68 international caps and represented Nigeria across four Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, three FIFA Women’s World Cups, and the 2008 Beijing Olympics, transitions into the coaching setup as an assistant.

The 10-time African champions face a demanding qualification path as they chase a ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Games. Having received a first-round bye as one of the continent’s top-ranked sides, the Super Falcons will lock horns with Comoros—who advanced after an astonishing 30-0 aggregate demolition of Sudan. Both legs of the second-round tie are locked in for the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne-Remo, slated for October 9 and 13, 2026.

Securing a spot in Los Angeles requires navigating four intense rounds of two-legged knockout fixtures. Should Eguavoen’s side sweep past Comoros, they will advance to the third round between February 23 and March 6, 2027, where a clash against either the Democratic Republic of Congo or Morocco awaits.

Subsequent hurdles later in 2027 could pitch Nigeria against Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic, or Mali in the fourth round before a potential final playoff gauntlet featuring regional powerhouses like Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, or Algeria. For now, however, all immediate attention shifts to Ikenne-Remo as Eguavoen looks to steady the ship and launch Nigeria’s journey back to the global pinnacle.
