The Benin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully recovered and returned the sum of N80 million to a businessman, Ifeanyi Innocent Madueke, who fell victim to a fraudulent landed property transaction in Delta State.
The recovery was officially handed over on Wednesday, September 24, 2026, by the Acting Zonal Director, Deputy Commander of the EFCC, Sa’ad Hanafi Sa’ad.
The ordeal began when 42-year-old Madueke purchased 146 acres of land valued at N232,800,000 from one Austine Muanya Okafor. However, after transferring the funds across three separate tranches, Madueke discovered he could not take physical possession of the property.
All attempts to secure the land or obtain a refund from Okafor hit a brick wall, prompting the distressed businessman to petition the anti-graft agency. Investigations by the EFCC substantiated the claims, leading to the immediate intervention and subsequent recovery of the N80 million tranche.
While presenting the bank draft, DCE Sa’ad reiterated the Commission’s unwavering commitment to executing its mandate with professionalism and integrity, emphasizing that economic fraudsters will not be permitted to retain illicit gains.
An elated Madueke expressed profound relief and gratitude upon receiving the draft, admitting that he had completely abandoned hope of recovering his funds prior to engaging the EFCC.
