The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ola Olukoyede, has called on students nationwide to leverage the internet and digital technologies positively for personal advancement and national development. Speaking at the inaugural Digital Festival at Rivers State University, Port Harcourt, he emphasized the internet’s potential as a platform for innovation, learning, and legitimate business ventures rather than criminal activities.
Represented by the EFCC’s Head of Cybercrime Section, Chief Superintendent Ibrahim Musa, Olukoyede urged the youth to maximize the opportunities within the cyber world responsibly. He expressed concern that despite abundant opportunities online, some individuals exploit the digital space negatively, contributing to the country’s cybercrime challenges.
Highlighting the benefits of digital assets like bitcoin, Olukoyede encouraged students to explore these technologies’ legal applications while warning strongly against fraud and cybercrimes. He lamented that the rampant cyber fraud has damaged Nigeria’s international image, asserting that criminal records can severely restrict opportunities such as foreign travel.
Olukoyede cautioned students to resist peer pressure and understand the legal and social consequences of cyber offences under the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Related Offences Act (AFF Act), which impose strict penalties.

At the festival, Jonah Emmanuel, Director of Excellence Academy, urged students to use the internet to market their ideas, develop solutions, and earn legitimate income. The event also featured technology experts and business innovators committed to inspiring students to engage constructively with digital opportunities.
This call aligns with broader efforts by the EFCC to enhance cyber resilience and combat cybercrime through advanced forensic capabilities, international cooperation, and public sensitization, aiming to protect Nigeria’s digital economy and reputation.
The Digital Festival at Rivers State University signals a push to empower the youth with knowledge and tools to navigate the digital age ethically and productively, reinforcing their role as key drivers of Nigeria’s growth and innovation.
