ILORIN, NIGERIA – Detectives from the Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have dismantled a sophisticated employment scam syndicate operating within the Kwara State capital.
The operation led to the arrest of the alleged mastermind, Bolaji Kazeem Akinwunmi, a socialite popularly known in local circles as “Bolaji Original.” He was apprehended alongside his suspected accomplice and former romantic partner, Kemisola Mary Akinbo.
The Web of Deceit
Investigations into the activities of the duo revealed a calculated scheme designed to prey on the desperation of unemployed youths. Akinwunmi allegedly impersonated high-ranking officials from premier paramilitary agencies, specifically the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS).
By donning these false identities, Akinwunmi reportedly convinced unsuspecting victims that he possessed exclusive “employment slots” within these agencies. Victims, seeking a stable career in the civil service, were allegedly coerced into paying various sums to secure these non-existent positions.
Financial Implication
The EFCC’s preliminary findings indicate that the syndicate successfully defrauded job seekers of a cumulative sum of ₦2,921,700. Evidence suggests that these funds were funneled through accounts linked to both Akinwunmi and Akinbo under the guise of “processing fees” and “official documentation” charges.
EFCC Warning
The anti-graft agency has reiterated its warning to the public regarding the recruitment processes of government agencies. The EFCC emphasized that no federal agency sells employment slots or utilizes third-party “consultants” for recruitment.
The suspects remain in custody as the Commission concludes its investigation. They are expected to be arraigned in court as soon as the case file is finalized.
