SAINT PETERSBURG — A series of coordinated Ukrainian drone strikes struck a major logistics hub operated by Wildberries, Russia’s largest e-commerce platform, near Saint Petersburg early Friday, igniting a massive fire and sending thick gray smoke billowing over the historic city.
According to regional officials and local reports, the predawn attack resulted in at least three injuries and triggered temporary operational halts at two of the company’s regional facilities. Alexander Drozdenko, governor of the surrounding Leningrad region, stated that air defense units intercepted 59 drones during the overnight assault, though impacts were still registered.
The incident marks the third consecutive week that Kyiv has targeted logistics nodes associated with the retailer, which critics in the Ukrainian government allege have been repurposed to support military supply chains and house components for unmanned aerial vehicles. The escalating long-range campaign—termed “long-range sanctions” by Ukrainian authorities—has increasingly targeted critical infrastructure deep inside Russian territory, more than 800 kilometers from the border.
The latest aerial assault caused significant logistical disruptions in the area, forcing Pulkovo airport in Saint Petersburg to temporarily suspend operations and disrupting approximately 50 departures before services resumed later in the morning.
The cross-border strikes coincide with an intensification of long-range operations by both sides. Moscow has continued its nightly barrage of ballistic missiles targeting urban centers across Ukraine, resulting in rising civilian casualties amid a stalled diplomatic landscape and ongoing regional conflicts.
