Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of Dr. Doyin Abiola, widow of Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, the acclaimed winner of Nigeria’s annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election. Dr. Abiola died peacefully on Tuesday at the age of 82.
In a heartfelt condolence message, Governor Abiodun described Dr. Doyin Abiola as a remarkable woman who contributed significantly to Nigerian society and the journalism profession. He highlighted her pivotal role during the turbulent period surrounding the June 12 election crisis, noting her unwavering support for her husband and her courageous fight for justice and democracy.
Dr. Doyin Abiola’s distinguished journalism career began at the Daily Sketch, followed by a role at the Daily Times, where she rose to group features editor. She made history as the first Nigerian woman to become editor-in-chief and managing director of a national daily newspaper with the Concord Group. Under her leadership, the Concord introduced innovative human-interest reporting and remained a steadfast voice advocating for the validation of the annulled June 12 election despite military suppression.
Governor Abiodun praised her resilience and dedication, emphasizing her role in championing democratic ideals during a time of great political unrest. He recalled her strength in standing by her husband throughout adversities, including military government opposition and her stewardship of Concord Newspapers, which faced closures and repression.

Her legacy extends beyond journalism into political activism, where she played a significant role in supporting the democratic process and advocating for the principles her late husband embodied. She was also recognized for empowering women and promoting gender equity in the media industry.
Dr. Doyin Abiola earned a doctorate in Communications and Political Science and was celebrated as a trailblazer who opened doors for women in Nigerian journalism.
