A mother and her teenage daughter died by suicide in their Hampshire home, months after the woman’s son and the girl’s brother also took his own life, an inquest has heard. Suzan Mahmoud, 42, and her 17-year-old daughter, Davina Allen, were found deceased at their residence on Shorefield Road, Downton, on December 29, 2022.
The discovery was made by Laura Allen, Suzan’s other daughter, and a family friend, who entered the property through a window after receiving no response to messages. The inquest revealed that both Suzan and Davina had left notes expressing profound grief and despair over the death of Harvey, Suzan’s autistic son and Davina’s brother, who died by suicide in August 2022.
A post-mortem examination determined that the mother and daughter died from a lethal combination of drugs. Evidence also suggested their involvement with online suicide forums.
Coroner Sarah Whitby concluded that both deaths were suicides, emphasizing the devastating impact of Harvey’s death on the family. Laura Allen testified that her mother and sister were “devastated” by the loss, with Suzan stating she “couldn’t live without him.” Davina’s note conveyed her intense sadness and anger regarding her brother’s passing and her own internal struggles.
The coroner noted that the likely date of death was December 25, Suzan’s birthday, although a precise timeline could not be established. This tragic incident underscores the profound and far-reaching consequences of suicide, and the critical need for mental health support for those affected by loss.
