Don Advocates Preservation of ‘Adire’ Textile Heritage

A don in the Department of Home Science and Management (HSM), Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof. Olufunmilayo Braide has made a compelling case for the preservation of Adire, a traditional textile art form of the Egbas. She spoke at the 2nd National Adire Festival held at the June 12 Cultural Center, Abeokuta. The festival, themed “Empowering Youths and Women for Economic Viability,” was organised by the Asani and Aduke Foundation.

Prof. Braide underscored the economic potential of Adire production, noting that the craft could significantly boost the nation’s economy if given the necessary support and attention. She highlighted the challenges faced by Adire producers, particularly the dependency on imported dye materials, and called for innovative solutions to promote local production. She also emphasised the need to empower youths and women to sustain this cultural heritage.

Commending the Convener of the festival for her dedication to promoting Adire and reviving the traditional craft, Prof. Braide urged continued support for initiatives that aim to preserve Nigeria’s cultural heritage.

The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, HRM Oba (Prof.) Saka Adelola Matemilola, Oluyalo Otileta VII, represented by Chief Abiodun Lasile, reiterated the importance of cultural preservation. He encouraged collective efforts to promote Adire, citing its potential for creating sustainable livelihoods. He called on all stakeholders to rally behind organisations like the Asani and Aduke Foundation in supporting the local textile industry.

Giving the rationale behind the festival, Dr. Ronke Adeboyejo, Executive Director of the Asani and Aduke Foundation, stated that the National Adire Festival was initiated to showcase the beauty of Adire and promote Nigerian culture globally. She called on both the government and private individuals to embrace and support efforts geared towards cultural preservation to safeguard the heritage from foreign influences.

Highpoint of the festival was the vocational training in Adire production for students from FUNAAB’s Department of Home Science and Management.
