Delta Monarch Surrenders to Police Following Wanted Declaration in Connection to Soldier’s Killing

The Ovie of Ewu Kingdom in the Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, Clement Ikolo, Urhukpe 1, has voluntarily surrendered himself to the police.

This decision follows the Defence Headquarters’ declaration of him and seven others as wanted on Thursday, in connection to the killing of military personnel in his domain.

The incident occurred on March 14, 2024, when officers and soldiers of the 181 Amphibious Battalion were attacked by irate youths during a peacekeeping mission in the Okuama community.

The ongoing land dispute between Okuama and Okoloba communities has fueled tensions since 2023.

Initially expressing shock at being listed among the wanted suspects, the monarch denied his involvement in a video released on Thursday, affirming his devout Christian faith.

According to Channels TV, the monarch surrendered himself at the state police command, arriving at 6:41 pm on Thursday and presenting himself to the state Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bright Edafe, confirmed the development.

Addressing reporters before surrendering, the monarch maintained his innocence regarding the allegations.

In response to the incident, the Nigerian military announced plans to offer a bounty for information leading to the apprehension of the suspects.

The funeral rites for the slain soldiers were conducted on Wednesday at the National Military Cemetery in Abuja.

Among the others declared wanted are Prof. Ekpekpo Arthur, Andaowei Dennis Bakriri, Akevwru Daniel Omotegbo (aka AMAGBEN), Akata Malawa David, Sinclear Oliki, Reuben Baru, and Igoli Ebi.

The Delta State spokesperson confirmed on Friday that the monarch has been handed over to the military authorities after reporting to the police.
