The Dangote Petroleum Refinery is preparing to raise about $5 billion through an initial public offering expected to conclude in October 2026, a listing that would rank among the largest in African market history.

A source familiar with the plans told Reuters that a cross-listing on other regional exchanges is not currently under consideration, with pre-IPO interest estimated at nearly $2 billion and projected valuations ranging between $40 billion and $50 billion.
ValidViewNetwork gathered that the refinery, which cost roughly $20 billion to build, began operations in 2024 and reached full capacity earlier this year.
The Nigerian National Petroleum Company holds just over a 7 per cent stake in the project, well below the 20 per cent it once committed to, after falling short of its funding obligations, even as NNPC’s leadership has separately floated plans to raise that stake back toward 20 per cent.
Consumers caught in the middle of a bigger contest
The IPO news lands alongside an active pump-price contest between Dangote and NNPC. NNPC trimmed its Lagos price by ₦10 to ₦1,255 per litre and its Abuja price by ₦36 to ₦1,299, effective August 7, matching cuts from the Dangote Refinery days earlier.
For Nigerian motorists still adjusting to prices that have roughly quadrupled since the 2023 subsidy removal, the naira-per-litre relief is real, if modest against the scale of the earlier shock.
Analysts caution that uncertainty around import policy, crude supply arrangements and market-access rules could still weigh on investor confidence in the listing, even as Aliko Dangote presses ahead with plans to raise output to 1.4 million barrels a day, a level that would make the facility the world’s single largest refinery by capacity.
Whether the IPO succeeds at its targeted valuation may say as much about Nigeria’s regulatory clarity as about the refinery’s own operational strength, and the outcome will likely shape how comfortable global investors feel backing Nigeria’s next wave of mega-projects.
