Oyo, Oyo State – Governor ‘Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has affirmed his administration’s dedication to upholding due process and established regulations in governing the state. He emphasized that his administration would continue its policy of non-interference in traditional institutions, maintaining impartiality in the selection of traditional rulers.

Governor Makinde made these remarks at the coronation ceremony of Oba Abdulakeem Abimbola Owoade I as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The event took place at Olivet Baptist High School, Oyo, and was attended by numerous dignitaries and citizens.

The governor highlighted that Oba Abimbola’s ascension to the throne demonstrates his administration’s commitment to due process and reflects the enduring spirit and resilience of the people of Oyo.

Makinde recounted instances where attempts were made to influence the selection process, stating, “Some people came to meet me to influence the selection process of the new Alaafin, but the Oracle didn’t really pick their candidates… The person that Ifa and the people of Oyo chose is the person we are witnessing his coronation here today as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo.”

He also addressed a past issue where bribery allegations surfaced during the initial selection process. “When they brought to me the first selection process and the person went on air to declare himself as the Alaafin-elect, I conducted an investigation and discovered that some people were bribed… Thereafter, I asked my conscience if the Alaafin’s stool was for sale and I said no, because I cannot defend it before my Maker.”

The governor urged Oba Owoade to dedicate himself to the progress of Oyo, assuring that the state government would continue to support the growth and development of the state, including promoting the Oyo World Sango Festival for UNESCO World Cultural Heritage recognition.

He also called on those contesting the Alaafin’s emergence in court to accept Oba Owoade as the divine and popular choice, backed by the Oyo State government.

Chief Bayo Adelabu, the Minister of Power and representative of President Bola Tinubu, congratulated Oba Owoade, noting that the Alaafin’s throne symbolizes cultural pride, unity, and the lasting legacy of one of Africa’s most influential empires.

Senator Monsurat Sunmonu, former Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, expressed gratitude to Governor Makinde on behalf of the people of Oyo and the Yoruba nation for providing them with an Alaafin free from controversy.

Senator Yunus Akintunde, representing Oyo Central Senatorial District, highlighted that the last Alaafin’s coronation in Oyo town occurred 54 years ago, pledging the support of Oyo sons and daughters to Alaafin Owoade in moving the town forward.

In his acceptance speech, Oba Owoade thanked Governor Makinde for his support of the traditional institution and the people of Oyo for their unwavering support. He emphasized the importance of shared responsibilities, unity, and cordial relationships among communities to foster progress and economic growth in Oyo kingdom and the state.

The event was graced by several prominent figures, including Chief Kola Adewusi (Osun State Deputy Governor), Prince Olusegun Omojuwa (Chief of Staff to Ondo State Governor), Engr. Tamunominini Makinde (Wife of the Oyo State Governor), Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal (Oyo State Deputy Governor), and numerous traditional rulers from across the country.
