The Congolese community in South Africa and the wider boxing fraternity are in mourning following the horrific death of professional boxer Roméo Katompa, widely known as “Bololo.” Katompa was killed in Johannesburg during the night of July 16–17, reportedly after being set on fire in a targeted attack.
Katompa, a long-term resident of South Africa, had become a deeply integrated and respected member of his local community. Beyond his athletic pursuits, he was a devoted family man, survived by his South African wife and their child.
In the boxing world, Katompa was a recognized talent and a dedicated professional. He had gained significant esteem for his role as a regular sparring partner for Junior Makabu, the former WBC cruiserweight world champion, earning respect for his work ethic and contributions to the sport.
While official investigations into the circumstances of his death are ongoing, the incident has drawn immediate, somber attention to the escalating climate of violence directed at foreign nationals across South Africa. This tragedy serves as a harrowing reminder of the persistent and lethal xenophobic tensions that continue to threaten the safety of immigrant communities, claiming lives and devastating families across the region.
