Conflict Escalates as U.S. and Iran Exchange Strikes in Persian Gulf

​The Persian Gulf crisis deepened on Sunday night as the United States military launched a fresh wave of precision airstrikes against Iranian targets, marking a sharp escalation in hostilities that has effectively unraveled a fragile June ceasefire.

​The military operation, initiated at 5 p.m. ET under the direct authorization of President Donald Trump, targeted Iranian air-defense systems, coastal radar installations, drone and missile facilities, and naval assets. U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the mission was aimed at “holding Iranian forces accountable” for ongoing threats to commercial shipping within the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

​For the first time in the current conflict, U.S. forces deployed a combination of fighter aircraft, naval vessels, and both one-way attack aerial and sea drones to neutralize capabilities that Washington claims have been used to harass international vessels.

​Tehran’s response was swift and geographically broad. According to reports from Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) retaliated with targeted strikes against U.S. military infrastructure across the Gulf. These included attacks on fuel storage and air defense systems in Kuwait, as well as strikes on maintenance facilities and a drone command center at the U.S. Air Base in Sheikh Isa, Bahrain.

​The regional violence follows a series of tit-for-tat exchanges throughout the week, including a significant confrontation on July 9 that saw missiles and drones fired toward Kuwait, Qatar, and Bahrain. As the conflict intensifies, international observers warn that the failure of the interim de-escalation deal risks a wider regional conflagration that could destabilize global energy markets dependent on the passage of tankers through the Strait of Hormuz.

​Iranian state media has reported casualties, noting at least one death and several injuries in the latest engagement. Meanwhile, U.S. officials maintain that their posture remains “prepared to ensure that freedom of navigation remains available” despite the escalating risk of open warfare.
