In a historic milestone for the Church of England, Dame Sarah Mullally has been appointed as the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, becoming the spiritual leader of 85 million Anglicans worldwide. At 63 years old, Mullally brings to the role a rich background as a former NHS chief nurse and Chief Nursing Officer for England, and as the Bishop of London since 2018—making her the third most senior member of the Church’s clergy. Her appointment comes after the resignation of Archbishop Justin Welby last year amid a safeguarding scandal .

Dame Sarah’s first public remarks as Archbishop-designate focused on condemning the recent deadly attack on a Manchester synagogue, emphasizing the Church’s responsibility to stand firmly with the Jewish community against antisemitism and all forms of hatred and racism. She highlighted the importance of unity amid “hatred that rises up through fractures across our communities” and pledged to address the Church’s legacy of safeguarding failures, acknowledging the deep harm such failings have caused

 .

The process of her appointment followed the Church’s tradition, with her name passed to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and onward to King Charles III, who has congratulated her on assuming this globally significant spiritual leadership. Sir Keir expressed his support, looking forward to collaboration with her in this vital role .

Dame Sarah’s career path is notable for her transition from healthcare to ministry. Ordained as a priest in 2006, she was the first female Bishop of London, where she was recognized for her administrative skills and efforts to modernize the diocese. She has been an outspoken opponent of assisted dying legislation, emphasizing the protection of vulnerable individuals, while also supporting the Church’s move to bless same-sex marriages—calling it “a moment of hope” .

Her appointment has been met with mixed reactions within the Anglican Communion. Conservative factions, particularly the Global Fellowship of Confessing Anglicans, have criticized the decision, maintaining belief in a male-only episcopacy based on their interpretation of the Bible. Meanwhile, progressive voices celebrate this appointment as a step toward inclusivity and renewal in the Church .

Dame Sarah acknowledged the historic nature of her appointment and its inspirational message for young women, encouraging them to dream beyond traditional limits. She commits to leading with collaboration and humility, recognizing the breadth of challenges facing the Church, from safeguarding to social cohesion .

Her election will be formally confirmed in January 2026, followed by an enthronement service, after which she will officially assume full responsibilities as Archbishop of Canterbury. As the Church navigates issues of faith, identity, and social justice, Dame Sarah Mullally’s leadership marks a new chapter in its 1,400-year history .

This appointment symbolizes a significant cultural and institutional shift toward gender equality within one of the world’s oldest Christian denominations and highlights the Church’s ongoing efforts to confront its past and address contemporary challenges.
