Pope Francis and Rome’s Chief Rabbi, Riccardo Di Segni, have renewed their tradition of interfaith friendship by exchanging heartfelt greetings as both the Christian Easter and Jewish Pesach coincide this year.
On Holy Thursday, Pope Francis sent a message to Rabbi Di Segni and the Jewish community of Rome, extending “cordial and fraternal greetings” as they prepare to celebrate Pesach, the Passover of 5785. The Pope recalled the biblical liberation from slavery and wished that “the eternal and merciful God be with you even today, and may He accompany your community with the abundance of His blessings.” He ended with a personal request: “I ask you to continue to pray for me, as I assure you of my prayer for you. May the Most High grant us to grow ever more in friendship. Chag sameach”.
Rabbi Di Segni responded warmly, noting the special coincidence of the two festivals. He offered his “warmest greetings, with a particular thought for your health, that it may continue to improve,” and prayed that the Lord would “bless our communities and strengthen our friendship, even in the difficult times we are currently facing”.
