Bengaluru City Police’s Anti-Narcotics Wing achieved a major victory against synthetic drug trafficking by arresting Nigerian national Ernest Onyekachi Ugah on January 19, 2026. The operation in Munnekolalu, under Marathahalli police limits, yielded 2.5kg of MDMA (ecstasy) and 300 pills, valued at ₹5.15 crore internationally—over ₦800 million.
Arrest Details
Ugah, 45, operated from a rented apartment, supplying drugs to nightlife dealers, party organizers, and users in Bengaluru’s entertainment hubs. Intelligence tracked him post-jail release for prior NDPS Act violations at Hennur and Kadugodi stations. He entered India five years ago for medical treatment but overstayed his visa, fueling concerns over immigration enforcement for foreign criminals.
Police registered a new NDPS case, holding Ugah in custody while probing supply chains, smuggling routes, and accomplices. The bust highlights Bengaluru’s role as a synthetic drug hotspot amid rising urban demand.
Broader Implications
Officers urge fast-track trials and stricter bail for repeat offenders to curb recidivism and enable deportations. This operation, led by ACP Mahananda and PI Shivaraj under DCP Raja Imam Kasim, earned praise from Commissioner Seemant Kumar Singh. Further arrests loom as backward and forward linkages are traced, signaling intensified anti-drug efforts.
