Tension gripped Omoku, headquarters of Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area in Rivers State, after a lawyer allegedly fired shots during a late-night masquerade display, resulting in one death and multiple injuries. The incident unfolded early on January 19, 2026, along Sambo Street, when youths performing the traditional masquerade reportedly clashed with Barrister Akpudi Ikechukwu and four Nigeria Forest Guards personnel. Eyewitness accounts indicate the confrontation began after a masquerade flogged the lawyer’s vehicle with a cane, prompting him to exit, draw a gun, and open fire.
Incident Details and Casualties
Police reports confirm nine masquerade group members sustained gunshot wounds. One victim, identified as Obulo, died at Omoku General Hospital, while eight others received treatment there. Initial sources described the deceased as an innocent bystander, though official statements link all injuries to the masquerade participants. The Rivers State Police Command, via spokesperson CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, noted the shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m., with a report reaching Omoku Division by 7:00 a.m.
Arrests and Escalation
Authorities swiftly arrested Barrister Akpudi Ikechukwu and two others, transferring them to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for interrogation. Angry youths retaliated by setting ablaze the lawyer’s family home near Santa Maria and his personal residence in Obrikom, heightening fears of further unrest. The Area Commander intervened to pacify the community, while joint police-military patrols now secure the area.
Police Response and Investigation
Preliminary probes aim to clarify culpability among all parties, with assurances of thorough justice. CSP Iringe-Koko emphasized ongoing investigations to prevent lawlessness, urging public calm and cooperation. This event underscores recurring tensions between modern security and cultural practices in Nigeria’s Niger Delta, where masquerade festivals often spark disputes.
