Bayelsa State Government and the City of Brampton, Toronto, Canada, have formalized a comprehensive 10-point bilateral agreement aimed at fostering cooperation across diverse sectors including education, environment, economic development, trade, innovation, agriculture, local administration, citizenship, energy, culture, tourism, and sports. The agreement was signed during a three-day Bayelsa-Brampton Trade and Investment Forum held at Brampton City Hall, with Bayelsa’s Attorney-General Biriyai Dambo SAN signing for the state and Brampton’s Director of Economic Development Denise McClure for the city, witnessed by Governor Douye Diri and Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown.

Brampton, known for its significant Nigerian diaspora of approximately 30,000 residents, expressed strong enthusiasm to deepen ties with Nigeria. Mayor Brown highlighted Brampton’s leadership in agro-processing, food security, ICT innovation, healthcare, and medical technology as key areas for partnership. Governor Diri emphasized Bayelsa’s rich natural resources, especially oil and gas, and its emerging ICT hub, calling for collaboration to develop agro-processing industries and oil palm estates in Bayelsa.

Governor Diri tasked the Bayelsa Investment Promotion Agency to liaise closely with Brampton officials for implementation and extended an invitation to Mayor Brown for a visit to Bayelsa to strengthen bilateral relations. This agreement marks a pivotal step in economic and cultural integration between Bayelsa and Brampton, reflecting a shared commitment to mutual growth and development.
