Campus Tensions Rise Over Law Programme Suspension
Protests erupted at Atiba University in Oyo State following a 10-year moratorium imposed on the institution’s Faculty of Law by the Council of Legal Education. The regulatory body cited inadequate facilities and unauthorized admissions for halting the programme.
During demonstrations outside the campus, a senior university official addressed the protesting students, drawing severe backlash after referring to them as “intellectually bankrupt” and dismissing their concerns about future legal career prospects. Footage of the confrontation quickly circulated online, intensifying student anger.
The National Association of Nigerian Students condemned the management’s remarks and actions, criticizing the continued enrollment of students despite lacking proper regulatory approval. NANS has called on regulatory bodies to intervene and establish a clear pathway for affected graduates and current undergraduates.
