MEMPHIS, TN — A 32-year-old woman is behind bars today, facing first-degree murder charges after text messages and surveillance footage allegedly linked her to the fatal shooting of a Memphis man in his home last month.
The suspect, identified as Ashunique Felton, is scheduled to make her first court appearance today, February 19, following a month-long investigation into the death of 47-year-old Karloss Stevenson.
A Gruesome Discovery
The case began on the morning of January 19, when Memphis Police officers arrived at a residence in the 7000 block of Merlot Cove. Inside, they discovered Stevenson lying face-down on a bed, dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Investigators recovered a handgun at the scene and noted two bullet holes in the bedroom wall, signaling a violent struggle.
The Digital Trail
The breakthrough in the case came from the victim’s smartphone. Detectives uncovered a series of text messages between Stevenson and Felton sent just hours before the killing. According to court affidavits, the pair had arranged to meet for a paid sexual encounter.
The digital evidence was extensive:
- Solicitation: Investigators found Felton’s phone number linked to a known prostitution website.
- Logistics: On the night of January 18, Stevenson messaged Felton to confirm he was “here” to pick her up in the 1300 block of Gaither.
- Explicit Media: The text thread allegedly contained explicit images and videos shared between the two.
Captured on Camera
Surveillance footage from the quiet cove provided the final pieces of the puzzle. Video from the night of the crime allegedly shows Stevenson leaving his home in a black Mercedes at 11:20 p.m. and returning shortly after midnight.
Moments later, two individuals were seen entering the residence. Shortly thereafter, a woman—whose description matches Felton—was captured fleeing the home on foot. While she entered empty-handed, cameras caught her carrying multiple items as she ran toward the end of the street.
Legal Proceedings
Felton is currently charged with first-degree murder in the perpetration of aggravated burglary. She is being held on a $35,000 bond. As the community awaits her preliminary hearing today, authorities have not yet confirmed if they are seeking the second individual seen entering the home on the night of the murder.
