The APC and PDP have filed separate petitions challenging Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election in Osun State, marking the latest twist in a political drama that has raised questions about the nature of his relationship with President Tinubu, particularly following Festus Keyamo’s cryptic remark: “Agreement is agreement.”

A Political Drama Unfolds

On the surface, it is a routine electoral dispute: two political parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), have filed petitions challenging the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The petitions, marked EPT/OS/GOV/01/2026 and EPT/OS/GOV/02/2026 respectively, were displayed at the Osun State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Monday, formally commencing the dispute resolution process.

But beneath the surface, this is a story of political calculation, strategic ambiguity and the complex relationship between state and federal power in Nigeria. The plot thickens when we recall that the PDP candidate had actually withdrawn from the race.

The Election Result and the PDP’s Peculiar Position

Governor Ademola Adeleke was declared the winner of the August 15 governorship election, polling 511,067 votes to defeat his closest challenger, the APC’s Bola Oyebamiji, who scored 444,815 votes, a winning margin of 66,252 votes. Adeleke won 19 of the 30 Local Government Areas, while Oyebamiji secured 11.

However, what makes the PDP’s petition particularly striking is that its candidate, Adedamola Adebayo (FRYO) , had withdrawn from the race on August 12, 2026, just days before the election, and endorsed Adeleke.

Adebayo announced his withdrawal during a press briefing in Osogbo.

The APM candidate also stepped down for Adeleke.

The fact that the PDP, whose candidate had stepped down, is now challenging the very election it declined to contest, raises profound questions about the nature of the party’s political calculations.

The Petitions

The APC petition challenges Adeleke’s victory, citing irregularities and alleging that the election was not conducted in accordance with the Electoral Act.

The APC’s petition was filed by its candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.

In a peculiar twist, the PDP, whose candidate had withdrawn from the race, has also filed a separate petition, marked EPT/OS/GOV/02/2026, filed by Adebayo Olugbenga Adedamola (FRYO) against Adeleke, INEC and the Accord Party.

The PDP’s petition is particularly puzzling given that its candidate had already endorsed the governor.

The Keyamo Factor

But the real political story lies not in the petitions themselves, but in the context in which they have been filed.

On August 16, 2026, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, posted a cryptic message on X that has since become a subject of intense speculation.

“Thank you, Governor Ademola Adeleke, for the public and unequivocal endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the 2027 Presidential Election,” Keyamo wrote.

“You are a man of integrity and honour. ‘Agreement is agreement” .

The phrase “agreement is agreement” was interpreted by many as evidence of a private deal between Adeleke and Tinubu, a deal that, some speculated, involved Adeleke endorsing Tinubu’s re-election in exchange for federal support or non-interference in his own re-election.

The Denial

Adeleke’s camp has denied any such deal. The Imole Campaign Council’s spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, said Adeleke’s support for Tinubu was based on the President’s performance and reforms, rather than any pre-arranged political agreement.

“Do not undermine the resilience of Osun people. There is no agreement,” Olajengbesi said.

“Osun people voted Adeleke. President Tinubu simply ensured democratic rules were respected”.

The Strategic Interpretation

But the persistence of the “agreement” narrative suggests that many observers are not convinced.

In political science, this is known as “strategic ambiguity”, the practice of leaving a political message open to multiple interpretations, allowing different audiences to draw different conclusions.

Keyamo’s message was strategically ambiguous: it could be read as a simple expression of gratitude, or as a coded reference to a private deal.

By not clarifying the nature of the “agreement,” Keyamo allowed the speculation to continue.

The Political Calculation Behind the Petitions

The filing of the petitions by both the APC and the PDP adds another layer of complexity to the story.

For the APC, filing a petition serves multiple purposes.

First, it allows the party to contest the election result without having to accept defeat.

Second, it keeps the matter in the public eye, potentially eroding Adeleke’s political capital.

Third, it sends a message to Adeleke: that his political position is not secure, and that he may need to rely on federal support to survive.

For the PDP, filing a petition is particularly curious given that its candidate had withdrawn from the race.

This action suggests that there may be internal divisions within the PDP, it could be a strategic move by FRYO to maintain the party’s relevance and keep its supporters mobilised.

A Strategy of Containment?

Some political analysts have suggested that the petitions may be part of a broader strategy to keep Adeleke in line.

By challenging his election, the APC and PDP are signalling that his political position is vulnerable, and that he may need to maintain good relations with the federal government to secure his position.

This is a classic “carrot and stick” approach: the stick is the legal challenge; the carrot is the promise of federal support if Adeleke aligns with the APC’s interests.

The Keyamo-Adeleke Dynamic

The Keyamo-Adeleke dynamic is particularly revealing. Keyamo, a prominent APC figure, has publicly praised Adeleke for his endorsement of Tinubu.

But by also hinting at an “agreement,” Keyamo has introduced a note of ambiguity that keeps Adeleke on his toes.In political science, this is known as “strategic ambiguity”, the use of vague language to create uncertainty and maintain leverage.

By not clarifying the nature of the “agreement,” Keyamo has left Adeleke’s political position uncertain.

A Lesson for Nigerian Youths

This story is a reminder that politics is not just about elections; it is about power.

The petitions challenging Adeleke’s re-election are not just about legal disputes; they are about political calculation.

The PDP Candidate’s decision to file a petition despite having withdrawn from the race raises questions about the coherence of opposition politics and the strategic calculation behind the legal challenges.

For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: never assume that elections are the end of the story. The same leaders who celebrate victory today may be fighting legal battles tomorrow.

The same voters who celebrate their candidate’s victory may soon see that victory challenged.

The PDP’s paradoxical position, endorsing a candidate while simultaneously challenging his victory, demonstrates the complexity of Nigerian politics.

Understand the politics behind the headlines. And never forget that in Nigeria, power is always contested.
