The 20 prospective members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) abducted while travelling to their orientation camps have arrived in Ibadan, Oyo State, after spending seven days in captivity in Imo State.

The rescued graduates arrived at the Department of State Services (DSS) headquarters in the Aleshinloye area of Ibadan South-West Local Government Area on Wednesday, October 7, where they were expected to undergo debriefing following their release.

Their arrival in Ibadan marks another stage in the case, which has drawn national attention because of the abduction, the security operation to locate the victims and emerging claims by relatives that ransom payments were made to secure their freedom.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the victims’ return to Oyo State comes amid unresolved questions about the precise circumstances of their release and the extent to which security operations and private negotiations contributed to the outcome.

VICTIMS TAKEN TO DSS HEADQUARTERS

According to reports from Ibadan, the rescued prospective corps members were taken to the DSS facility in Aleshinloye after arriving in the state.

At the time of reporting, only representatives of the victims’ parents had been allowed access to the premises, while other relatives and sympathisers remained outside.

The authorities have not publicly provided a full account of the debriefing process or confirmed when all the victims would be reunited with their families. Their arrival follows their recovery at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State on October 7, after security agencies conducted search-and-rescue operations.

The victims were initially taken for medical assessment and necessary care following their release. Their transfer to Ibadan brings them closer to their families and the community from which they began their journey to the NYSC orientation camps.

HOW THE 20 PROSPECTIVE CORPS MEMBERS WERE ABDUCTED

The incident occurred on October 1, 2026, when 30 prospective corps members travelling in two buses from Oyo State came under attack along the Owerri-Onitsha Expressway near Umunoha in Imo State.

The graduates were travelling to orientation camps in Abia and Akwa Ibom states.Gunmen reportedly abducted 20 of the travellers, while the remaining 10 escaped into the bush and subsequently made their way to safety.

The abduction triggered anxiety among the victims’ families, who spent days seeking information and appealing for assistance to secure their children’s release.

The parents also sought intervention from the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, as pressure mounted for the authorities to locate the victims. The kidnappers reportedly initially demanded N50 million for each victim, amounting to N1 billion.

Reports later indicated that the demand was reduced to N5 million per person. The victims regained their freedom seven days after the attack.

SECURITY AGENCIES ANNOUNCED RESCUE OPERATION

The Nigeria Police Force confirmed the victims’ release on October 7, saying the operation involved collaboration with other security agencies. The police said the 20 prospective corps members were rescued at Amakohia Ubi Village in Imo State after sustained search-and-rescue operations.

The Force also said the victims were taken for medical assessment and necessary care, while efforts continued to apprehend those responsible for the abduction.

Earlier in the week, Imo State police authorities had disclosed that security agencies had identified the suspected kidnappers’ location but were cautious about entering the area because intelligence indicated that improvised explosive devices had been planted there.

The reported threat complicated efforts to reach the victims and heightened concerns among their relatives.

Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma subsequently commended the security agencies for their coordinated efforts. He also praised cooperation between the Imo and Oyo state governments.

The police have not announced the arrest of the principal suspects in the abduction.

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the victims’ arrival in Ibadan follows the official announcement of their recovery, but the investigation into the kidnapping and the pursuit of the abductors remain important outstanding issues.

RANSOM CLAIMS COMPLICATE THE RESCUE ACCOUNT

The victims’ return to Ibadan comes as families have begun speaking publicly about the negotiations they say took place during the period of captivity.

One mother said her family paid N6 million to secure the release of her son, explaining that the abductors initially demanded a much larger sum.

Other relatives have also claimed that ransom payments were made. These accounts have raised questions because the police attributed the victims’ recovery to sustained security operations, while the families say money was paid during negotiations with the kidnappers.

The two accounts should not automatically be treated as mutually exclusive. However, the precise sequence of events, the number of families that paid ransom and the role such payments may have played in the victims’ release have not been fully established publicly.

The police have not confirmed that ransom was paid or explained whether investigators are examining the families’ claims.

ValidViewNetwork authoritatively reports that the ransom allegations remain an important part of the developing story, but individual family accounts do not, on their own, establish the circumstances surrounding the release of all 20 victims.

FAMILIES AWAIT REUNION WITH THEIR CHILDREN

The arrival in Ibadan represents a significant moment for families who spent a week fearing for the safety of their children.

However, the restriction on access to the DSS facility meant that some relatives and sympathisers were still waiting outside while representatives of the parents were permitted to enter.

The authorities have yet to provide a detailed public update on the victims’ condition, their debriefing or the arrangements for their final reunion with their families.

Given the ordeal they experienced, medical assessment and appropriate psychological support will be important as they recover from captivity.

Their return also places renewed attention on the safety of young Nigerians travelling long distances to take part in national service activities.

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

The immediate priorities are the victims’ recovery, their safe reunion with their families and the continued investigation into the abduction.

Security agencies are still expected to identify and apprehend the people responsible. Any evidence concerning ransom demands or payments may also be relevant to the investigation.

Authorities should clarify the circumstances surrounding the release when doing so will not compromise ongoing operations or endanger the victims.

The case also raises broader concerns about the security of major roads and the vulnerability of travellers to kidnapping.

ValidViewNetwork will continue to follow developments concerning the victims’ reunion with their families, the investigation into the abduction and any official response to the ransom allegations.

The safe return of the 20 prospective corps members is welcome news, but the case will not be fully resolved until those responsible are brought to justice and the circumstances surrounding the abduction and release are properly established, ValidViewNetwork reports.

The episode reinforces the need for effective road security, timely intelligence-sharing and coordinated responses to kidnapping, alongside transparent investigations that distinguish verified facts from claims still awaiting confirmation.
