Portugal forward Rafael Leão has been handed the national team’s No. 7 shirt following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure.
Leão previously wore No. 17 for Portugal but was listed with No. 7 for the team’s latest fixture against Denmark.
UEFA’s records also reflected Ronaldo’s name alongside the number in its database, indicating that some records were still being updated around the change.
The switch places Leão in possession of one of the most recognisable shirt numbers in Portuguese football.
Ronaldo wore the number for Portugal throughout much of his international career and turned it into a major part of his football identity.
A NUMBER WITH A HISTORY
The No. 7 shirt carries particular significance because of Ronaldo’s long association with it.
For Leão, the change comes as Portugal continues its transition from an era dominated by Ronaldo to a squad increasingly built around a younger generation.
The shirt number itself, however, does not determine a player’s role or status in the national team.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Leão’s assignment of No. 7 follows Ronaldo’s departure, although official football databases may take some time to synchronise changes across competitions.
Leão’s new number will consequently attract attention whenever Portugal next takes the field, particularly because of the identity of its previous long-term wearer.
