Nkosikhona Andries “Phakel’umthakathi” Ndabandaba, the high-profile Zulu cultural leader, traditional regiment commander and anti-illegal immigration activist, has signalled interest in expanding his screen work after veteran South African actor and filmmaker Israel Matseke Zulu publicly invited him to appear in one of his upcoming movie productions and on his podcast.
The invitation, which circulated widely among supporters this week, was met with a warm response from Ndabandaba. He expressed appreciation for the gesture and said he would be honoured to meet the seasoned performer. While no formal role or production details have been confirmed, the exchange has generated excitement among fans who see Ndabandaba’s commanding public presence, storytelling style and deep cultural roots as natural assets for the screen.
Ndabandaba, born in Nongoma, KwaZulu-Natal, in 1980, is no newcomer to television. He has already appeared in major productions, most notably as Mahlabeni in the historical drama Shaka iLembe and in Smoke & Mirrors. A former journalist who rose to national prominence in 2023 by leading amabutho (traditional Zulu warriors) at the funeral of Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi — famously displaying the late leader’s age and clan name on his body — he has since balanced cultural leadership of the KwaMandlakazi regiment with activism and mentoring programmes such as his Ibhunga Boys Bootcamp.ee6754

Matseke Zulu, a respected figure known for roles in Tsotsi, iNumber Number, Gomora and numerous other films and series, hosts his own podcast and continues to work behind and in front of the camera. His public outreach to Ndabandaba is viewed by supporters as recognition of the younger man’s distinctive profile and potential to bring authentic cultural energy to new projects.
Observers note that Ndabandaba has previously spoken about his love of acting as a second career alongside his traditional responsibilities, while setting clear personal boundaries around certain types of scenes. The latest invitation is being interpreted as a possible next step that could see him take on more substantial film work in the future.
No contracts or shooting dates have been announced. Fans and cultural commentators will be watching closely to see whether the discussion between the two men develops into concrete collaborations in film, television or digital media.
The development adds another layer to Ndabandaba’s multifaceted public life as traditional leader, activist and performer, at a time when he continues to draw significant attention for his cultural and social campaigns.
