Windstorm Batters Abuja’s New ₦31bn Kugbo Bus Terminal Months After Commissioning

​ABUJA — A powerful rainstorm accompanied by heavy winds ripped through the Federal Capital Territory on Tuesday, causing significant structural damage to the newly constructed Kugbo Bus Terminal, a flagship project of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

​The facility, which was commissioned in June 2025 as part of a multi-billion naira infrastructure drive to modernize Abuja’s transport sector, suffered extensive damage to its roofing and facade. Debris from the terminal was blown onto the busy Nyanya–Keffi Expressway, resulting in a massive traffic gridlock that left thousands of commuters stranded for over three hours.

​Questions Over Resilience

​While FCTA officials have described the event as a natural “windstorm,” the damage has sparked a heated public debate regarding the resilience of the ₦31 billion project. Critics and structural experts have raised concerns over how a facility less than a year old could suffer such visible failure during a seasonal downpour.

​Social media was awash with videos of the crumpled roofing sheets, with many residents questioning the quality of the materials used. “This is a project meant to last decades, not succumb to the first major wind of the season,” one observer noted.

​Official Response and Repair

​In an official statement released by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications to the FCT Minister, the administration confirmed that while the damage was significant, no casualties were recorded.

​”A strong windstorm happened along with heavy rain, and it caused some damage to the Kugbo Bus Terminal and minor damage to the Nyanya pedestrian bridge. Preliminary reports show that no one was injured, and no vehicles were damaged.”

​The Minister has since ordered:

• ​Immediate Mobilization: Security personnel have been deployed to the site to manage traffic and prevent looting of materials.

• ​Contractor Liability: The FCTA clarified that the contractor, Planet Projects Limited, will be responsible for the repairs under the existing project guarantees.
• ​Safety Audit: Structural engineers are expected to conduct a comprehensive assessment to ensure the terminal is safe before its scheduled full operational launch later this month.

​The incident comes at a sensitive time for the FCT Administration, as the terminal was one of the key projects slated to showcase the success of the current administration’s “Renewed Hope” agenda in the capital city.
