The Nigeria Police Force has summoned its officers who were caught on camera providing escort for the President of Students Union, Adamawa State University.
A video of the police officers providing escort for the SUG President had surfaced online providing a negative impression about the police force. The video showed the arrival of the students’ union leader at a convention with two armed policemen walking beside his car while other students hailed and cheered him. A student later opened the door for the SUG president after the car came to a halt.
According to a post on X, formerly Twitter, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Monday explained that the armed police officers were deployed purposely to maintain peace and order during the convention and electoral process organised by the National Union of Adamawa State Students (NUADSS) on September 4 and 5, 2023.
Adejobi in the post tagged “MISCONDUCT” unabigously lamented that the actions of the police officers who reduced themselves to working as personal security men to the president of the school’s students’ union were unacceptable.
Adejobi said, “We are committed to maintaining professionalism and upholding the dignity of the Nigeria Police Force.
“Regarding the recent incident involving two Constables escorting a student union president in Adamawa State, their actions were unacceptable and do not represent the values of our force. The officers, who are attached to Jimeta Divisional Police Command, along with their superiors, have been summoned to the Force Headquarters for appropriate action.
“It’s important to note that they were deployed to maintain peace and security during the convention and electoral process organized by the National Union of Adamawa State Students (NUADSS) on 4th and 5th of September, 2023.
“Their actions were not in line with the purpose for which they were deployed. They have both been referred to the Force Provost for further disciplinary actions.”
