BRASÍLIA — Hours after suffering a narrow defeat in Brazil’s polarizing presidential runoff, right-wing senator Flávio Bolsonaro has been barred from leaving the country and ordered by the Supreme Court to surrender his passports.
The high-stakes legal blow was handed down by Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes—the same jurist who oversaw the high-profile coup trial of the senator’s father, former President Jair Bolsonaro.
The sudden travel ban intensifies political volatility in Latin America’s largest democracy following a historic election where incumbent Leftist leader Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva secured a victory with 51.8% of the vote to Bolsonaro’s 48.2%.
High-Level Scrutiny and Passport Seizure
Flávio Bolsonaro, 45, was intercepted by federal police officers on the street shortly after visiting his imprisoned father. According to the senator, authorities served him with immediate orders to hand over all travel documents and enforced a strict international travel prohibition, which he denounced as “a clear attempt to intimidate me.”
Judicial sources indicate that the restrictions stem from a broader, confidential federal investigation involving allegations of money laundering and illicit foreign exchange transactions, alongside separate inquiries tied to financing a biographical film about his father. The right-wing politician has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
The senator claimed the passport seizure was triggered by comments made by his brother, U.S.-based former lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, who suggested publicly that Flávio would need to flee Brazil if he lost the election. “I never said that,” Flávio insisted in a video published to Instagram.
Contested Results and Vowed Resistance
Refusing to concede defeat, Bolsonaro announced plans to challenge the legitimacy of the ballot, arguing that a court-mandated two-hour extension of voting windows favored Lula—despite his own campaign having initially requested similar operational adjustments.
With political tensions running high and financial markets reacting sharply to the election outcome, Bolsonaro vowed to spearhead the political opposition against the incoming administration.

”To withstand the chaos, I’m going to organize the opposition,” Bolsonaro declared, setting the stage for a deeply fractured legislative term as Lula assumes office for a fresh mandate.
