A Kaduna man identified as Zakka, who was abducted alongside his wife and daughter by gunmen, has sent out a desperate plea for help, saying his right hand is swelling badly and his captors are threatening to cut it off if the ransom is not paid.
The plea highlights the worsening insecurity in parts of northern Nigeria and the agony of families whose loved ones are held by kidnappers with no regard for human life.
THE ABDUCTION
Zakka was abducted along with his wife and daughter by armed men in Kaduna State. The circumstances of the abduction were not immediately clear, but the family has been in captivity for some days.
In a message sent from captivity, Zakka said his right hand was swelling and that he feared his captors would carry out their threat to amputate it if the ransom demand was not met.
“I don’t want my hand cut off. Please help me,” he pleaded.
THE THREAT
According to the account, the kidnappers have threatened to cut off Zakka’s hand if the ransom is not paid. The swelling of his hand suggests an injury or infection that has gone untreated, raising the possibility of permanent damage or worse.
The threat of amputation, coupled with the untreated injury, places Zakka in immediate danger.
THE FAMILY’S PLEA
The family is appealing to the Kaduna State Government, security agencies, and well-meaning Nigerians to intervene and secure the release of Zakka, his wife, and his daughter.
They are also seeking medical assistance, fearing that Zakka’s hand may be lost without urgent treatment.
THE BROADER CONTEXT
Kaduna State has been one of the epicentres of kidnapping in Nigeria, with armed groups operating in the forests and rural communities.
The abduction of whole families has become a recurring pattern, with kidnappers targeting rural communities and demanding ransoms that families often cannot afford.
The Nigerian government has repeatedly promised to tackle insecurity, but abductions continue across Kaduna, Zamfara, Katsina, Niger, and other states.
WHY IT MATTERS
The ordeal of Zakka and his family is a reminder of the human cost of Nigeria’s security crisis.
Beyond the statistics, there are real people, husbands, wives, children — whose lives are shattered by abduction.
The threat of amputation adds another layer of horror.
