OOU Vice Chancellor wins unanimous election as state universities seek stronger funding, academic excellence and policy advocacy
A new national responsibility has come calling on Olabisi Onabanjo University’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ayodeji Olayinka Johnson Agboola, whose leadership at the Ogun State institution has now earned him a wider platform to influence the future of public university education in Nigeria.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Professor Agboola has been unanimously elected Chairman of the Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian State Universities (CVCNSU), adding a significant national leadership responsibility to his role as the head of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, Ogun State.
According to an official news release issued by OOU’s Corporate Affairs Division on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, Professor Agboola was elected on Tuesday, October 13, during the committee’s meeting in Abuja. Before his election, he served as the committee’s Alternate Chairman.
The election followed the expiration of the tenure of the committee’s former chairperson, Professor Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji Bello, the immediate past Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, Ojo, Lagos.
The meeting, held at the premises of the National Universities Commission (NUC), brought together Vice Chancellors of state universities from across the country.
Agboola pledges commitment to state universities
In his acceptance speech, Professor Agboola expressed gratitude to his colleagues for the confidence they had placed in him. He also pledged to work with members of the committee to advance the interests of state universities across Nigeria.
Highlighting the priorities of his new leadership, the university’s statement quoted him as pledging to work with colleagues to further the cause of state universities, particularly in the areas of “funding, academic excellence, and policy advocacy.”
The priorities are particularly significant at a time when public universities face increasing demands to strengthen academic standards, improve research output, expand access to quality education and secure sustainable funding.
Professor Agboola also paid tribute to the outgoing chairperson, commending her purposeful leadership and contributions to the association’s growth. He congratulated Professor Olatunji Bello on completing her tenure as the ninth substantive Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University, one of Nigeria’s first generation state universities.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the new appointment places Professor Agboola at the centre of discussions on the future of state owned universities, including their funding priorities, academic performance and engagement with national education policy.

As chairman, his ability to build consensus, engage education stakeholders and champion practical solutions will be important to the committee’s influence and effectiveness.
The central challenge is clear: state universities must not only survive prevailing pressures but also create environments where students can thrive, academics can produce impactful research and institutions can contribute meaningfully to national development.
From leading reforms at OOU to representing the collective interests of state universities, Professor Agboola now has a larger platform on which to turn leadership experience into shared progress. His election will ultimately be measured not simply by the distinction of the office he occupies, but by the improvements his leadership helps deliver for universities, scholars and students across Nigeria, ValidViewNetwork reports.
As the new chairman begins his tenure, expectations will centre on collaboration, stronger advocacy and practical outcomes for state owned institutions. Whether in funding, academic excellence or policy engagement, the task ahead is to translate the confidence expressed by his colleagues into lasting institutional gains, ValidViewNetwork reports.
