The Federal Government has announced a ₦250 million support package for the families of 37 young men who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Niger State.
Vice President Kashim Shettima announced the intervention during a condolence visit to the Niger State Government and people of the state.
The deaths have become a matter of national concern, particularly because the victims were reportedly in state custody when they died.
“A MATTER OF NATIONAL CONCERN”
Shettima said the government shared the grief of the affected families and stressed that citizens deprived of their liberty remain entitled to the protection of the state.
The statement places responsibility on government institutions to account for the circumstances surrounding deaths occurring in custody.
SUPPORT IS NOT THE END OF THE MATTER
The financial support may provide immediate assistance to families facing the consequences of losing breadwinners and relatives.
But compensation does not, by itself, answer questions about how the deaths occurred.
There must also be clarity about the circumstances surrounding the incident, the responsibilities of relevant authorities and whether any failures contributed to the loss of life.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the Federal Government’s intervention should therefore be viewed alongside the need for accountability, transparent investigation and measures capable of preventing a recurrence. For families who have lost loved ones, financial assistance can ease hardship, but answers and justice remain equally important.
