Ogun Traffic Officer Bello Honoured With N1m For Exemplary Service
Retired Ogun State traffic officer Anifat Bello has received a N1 million cash gift from the wife of Peoples Democratic Party deputy governorship candidate Ladi Adebutu and the candidate’s running mate, in recognition of her years of public service.
Bello became widely known in Abeokuta for her long service directing traffic, particularly around the NNPC Junction in the state capital. Her career recently received renewed attention following her retirement and a series of public recognitions for her dedication.
ValidViewNetwork reported in September that Bello had retired after 35 years of service and had recounted the risks, discrimination and unusual experiences that marked her career.
She has also received recognition from the Ogun State Police Command and traffic management authorities.
A CAREER BUILT AROUND THE ROADSIDE
Bello’s story is unusual because her public visibility did not come from political office or celebrity. For years, motorists in Abeokuta knew her simply as the traffic officer controlling vehicles at one of the city’s busy junctions.
Her career also included a widely reported 2016 incident in which she was allegedly assaulted by a police officer after stopping his private vehicle while performing her duty. The police at the time ordered an investigation into the allegation.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Bello’s latest recognition is therefore part of a longer public-service story, rather than an isolated political gift. Her name has continued to attract attention because of the unusual consistency with which she performed a demanding roadside job.
RECOGNITION BEYOND POLITICS
The Ogun Police Command recently honoured Bello alongside other serving and retired officers, describing the recipients as people who had distinguished themselves through service.
The latest N1 million gift came from political actors, making the gesture politically notable as the 2027 election season approaches.
However, recognition of Bello’s service should not be reduced to partisan politics.
The central issue is the value of acknowledging ordinary public workers whose jobs rarely attract national attention.
ValidViewNetwork reports that public recognition can serve a useful purpose when it reminds society that public service is not limited to senior officials.
Bello’s story also shows how a person working at a seemingly ordinary roadside post can become a familiar and respected figure in a city through consistency and discipline.
The broader lesson is that societies should recognise honest public service while ensuring that such recognition does not become merely a political instrument. Good work deserves appreciation regardless of who offers the reward.
