One person has been killed and seven others injured after gunmen opened fire on a vehicle carrying traders returning from the Kara Market in Bukuru, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The attack occurred on Sunday along the Bukuru Expressway, with police confirming that seven injured victims had been traced to the Military Clinic at Rukuba Barracks in Jos.
The Plateau State Police Command said the vehicle was carrying traders returning from the market when it came under attack.
Police spokesman SP Alfred Alabo said the incident occurred at about 4:30pm on October 4. The command said tactical and anti-robbery teams had been mobilised around the area while intelligence gathering had been intensified to identify and arrest the attackers.
Other reports citing community and traders’ sources put the death toll at one and the number injured at seven.
ROUTE UNDER SECURITY CONCERN
The Kara Bukuru market is an important trading point, and attacks on traders travelling to and from the area can have consequences beyond the immediate casualties.
Fear of attacks can disrupt commercial movement, affect market attendance and deepen mistrust among communities that depend on the route. The motive of the attackers has not been established.
ValidViewNetwork reports that police have not publicly attributed the attack to any particular group, and doing so without evidence would risk turning an already sensitive security incident into a source of further tension.
The command has directed investigators to pursue the attackers while increasing security around the area. The incident also comes against the backdrop of recurring violence in parts of Plateau State, where disputes involving communities, farmers, herders and criminal groups have periodically resulted in deaths and displacement.
INVESTIGATION BEGINS
Police have appealed to residents to report suspicious activity and cooperate with security agencies. The injured victims are receiving medical attention. The immediate task is to establish who carried out the attack and why.
ValidViewNetwork reports that any response must combine security action with protection of commercial routes, because traders should be able to travel to markets without becoming targets.
The authorities must also ensure that those responsible are identified through evidence-based investigation and prosecuted according to law, rather than allowing the attack to trigger retaliation or communal blame.
