Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has reignited his running feud with Meta by bluntly declaring that “Instagram is for girls”, sparking a fresh wave of controversy across the digital landscape.
The tech mogul’s remarks came via his personal X account in response to a post by venture capital firm Geiger Capital. The firm publicly announced it had officially deleted its Instagram presence, dismissing the Meta-owned platform as an “inherently female app” offering “zero benefit”. Endorsing the move, Musk chimed in with the short, definitive reply: “Instagram is for girls”.
The exchange quickly triggered widespread reactions and fierce online debates over gender stereotypes and the cultural utility of mainstream social media platforms. While critics accused the X owner of reinforcing regressive gender tropes and trivializing men who utilize image-based networks, supporters defended or lightheartedly dismissed the comment as typical banter targeting a corporate rival.
This latest broadside mirrors previous remarks made by Musk. Back in May, the billionaire similarly disparaged the platform, posting “Lmao. Instagram is for girls” alongside provocative commentary questioning the digital habits of adult male users.
As the public rivalry between Musk and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg continues to play out, industry analysts note that such commentary underscores the ongoing culture war between rival digital ecosystems—pitting text-and-news-driven networks against visual, lifestyle-oriented platforms—even if Musk offered no empirical backing for his sweeping demographic claims.
