The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has initiated high-level diplomatic efforts to mend fences with Cristiano Ronaldo following the 41-year-local icon’s controversial departure from the national team camp in Copenhagen.
The fallout emerged earlier this week ahead of Portugal’s UEFA Nations League fixtures. Tensions boiled over when head coach Jorge Jesus opted to leave Ronaldo on the bench during the victory over Norway and subsequently altered rotation plans. Dissatisfied with communication and unused warm-up periods, the veteran forward walked out of the team hotel and flew to Madrid, prompting an unsuccessful airport interception by both Jesus and FPF President Pedro Proença.
Despite Portugal securing a 4-2 win over Denmark in his absence, federation chiefs are eager to de-escalate the crisis. According to reports originating from Marca, governing body officials have scheduled a face-to-face meeting with Ronaldo next week to clear the air.
The FPF remains keen on preserving a dignified and harmonious conclusion to the forward’s illustrious international career, emphasizing that his historic contributions to Portuguese football deserve a fitting final chapter rather than an abrupt exit. Ronaldo has previously indicated he will address the public regarding the exact catalysts behind his sudden departure once the dust settles.
