Portugal defeated Denmark 4-2 in Copenhagen on Thursday as the team played its first match since Cristiano Ronaldo left the squad, putting the forward’s immediate international future in doubt.
The victory maintained Portugal’s perfect record in Group A4 of the UEFA Nations League, with Jorge Jesus’ side collecting nine points from three matches.
Portugal opened the scoring through Joao Cancelo before Goncalo Ramos doubled the advantage. Denmark responded on both occasions. Mikkel Damsgaard pulled one back for the hosts before Rasmus
Hojlund equalised to make it 2-2.Portugal regained control after the break when Vitinha scored in the 67th minute.
Joao Felix then added a fourth late in the game to secure the victory. The result gave Portugal a six-point lead at the top of the group, according to Reuters. The match was Portugal’s first since Ronaldo walked out on the squad, leaving uncertainty over his future with the national team.
Despite the absence of the 41-year-old forward, Portugal produced enough attacking quality to overcome Denmark away from home. The victory also gives Jorge Jesus a positive result during a period of transition and uncertainty surrounding the team’s most recognisable player.
ValidViewNetwork reports that Portugal’s 4-2 victory does not by itself resolve the question of Ronaldo’s future with the national team, but it gives the side three more Nations League points as the group campaign continues.
