At 82, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, is asking for less noise and more prayer.
The monarch has urged his people, friends and well-wishers to mark his birthday and coronation anniversary with thanksgiving and prayers rather than an elaborate celebration.
Ladoja’s message comes as he approaches another birthday milestone alongside the anniversary of his ascension to the ancient Ibadan throne.
Rather than call for parties, the Olubadan asked those wishing him well to use the occasion to pray for him, Ibadanland and the wider community.
The request fits the tone of a monarch whose public role now extends beyond personal celebration. His birthday has become an occasion for reflection on the traditional institution and the people over whom he presides.
For many Nigerians, birthdays of public figures have become occasions for large gatherings, music, food and photographs.
Ladoja is asking for something different.

His preference is for the occasion to be marked quietly, with gratitude for life and prayers for continued peace and progress.
ValidViewNetwork reports that the Olubadan’s 82nd birthday will therefore be observed with a distinctly low-key tone, as the monarch asks his people to replace elaborate merriment with thanksgiving and prayer.
