‘My Heart Breaks’: Atiku Offers Scholarship to Teen Miner in Viral Niger Video

A teenage boy who became a face of Nigeria’s mining crisis after speaking on camera from a mining site may now have a path out of the pit.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has offered to support the education of Yusuf Aliyu, whose video from a mining community in Niger State went viral after 37 people died while in custody following arrests linked to suspected illegal mining.

Atiku said his “heart breaks” whenever he watches the teenager speaking in the video.

He said he saw in Aliyu not simply a young person involved in artisanal mining, but a Nigerian child whose circumstances raise questions about poverty, education and the country’s mineral wealth.

The teenager’s story has become more striking because of what happened around the same mining environment.

Authorities had arrested suspected illegal miners in Niger State, after which 37 detainees died in custody. The precise cause of death remains under investigation, with authorities initially citing a possible disease outbreak while survivors and other accounts pointed to overcrowded and poorly ventilated detention conditions.

President Bola Tinubu ordered an investigation and suspended senior officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps following the deaths.Against that background, Aliyu’s video has drawn attention not only to illegal mining but to the young Nigerians who enter dangerous mining sites because of economic pressure.

Atiku’s scholarship pledge puts education at the centre of the response to one young person’s story. The wider challenge, however, remains much larger than one scholarship.Nigeria’s mineral-rich communities continue to face questions about illegal mining, child labour, unsafe working conditions, environmental damage and whether local residents receive meaningful benefits from the resources beneath their land.
