Tinubu’s October 1 Transport Promise Meets 500 New CNG Stations

President Bola Tinubu has put a date on his latest promise to Nigerians struggling with transport costs. The Federal Government now says the expansion of the country’s CNG network is also moving towards that October deadline.

The first batch of 500 new CNG stations is expected by the end of October, according to the Executive Chairman of the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative, Ismael Ahmed.

Another 500 stations are expected to follow, taking the planned procurement to 1,000 stations nationwide. The development comes just days after Tinubu said Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs from October 1.

In a statement on September 19, the President said the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme was being developed with the states and other stakeholders to reduce the cost of public transportation.

Tinubu pointed to Borno as an existing example, saying CNG-powered and electric public transport services were carrying commuters for between ₦50 and ₦100 on routes where commercial operators charge between ₦300 and ₦600.

The key question now is how quickly the infrastructure can translate into cheaper fares for ordinary commuters.

More filling stations should make CNG easier to access, but lower pump or conversion costs do not automatically determine what passengers pay.

State governments, transport operators, fleet owners and transport unions will also play roles in how the savings reach commuters.

That is why the October timeline matters. The Federal Government is not simply announcing another energy infrastructure project. It is linking the CNG expansion directly to a promise that Nigerians should feel the difference in their daily transportation costs.

The government has said the additional stations are intended to help more Nigerians benefit from cheaper transport, particularly for intra-state journeys.

For commuters, however, the real test will be visible at bus stops and on roads, not in the number of stations announced.If the infrastructure expands but transport fares remain unchanged, the policy will be harder for ordinary passengers to feel.

If CNG availability grows and operators pass measurable savings to passengers, the October programme could become a more visible part of the government’s attempt to reduce transport pressure.
