Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, has officially granted a presidential-style prerogative of mercy to Chidozie Nwangwu, widely known as the popular native doctor Akwa Okuko Tiwara Aki. Alongside the pardon, Nwangwu has been named an ambassador for youth reformation within the state.
Nwangwu was initially apprehended alongside seven other traditional practitioners during a state-wide crackdown last year. Authorities targeted individuals accused of promoting money rituals, quick wealth acquisition narratives, and alleged associations with the use of human body parts for ritualistic wealth.
During subsequent legal proceedings, Nwangwu entered into a plea bargain, resulting in an 11-month custodial sentence. While serving his time at the Nigeria Correctional Center in Amawbia, state officials established pathways for restorative justice. The terms of his rehabilitation required him to formally renounce his previous practices and commit to championing positive behavioural change among regional youth.
Dr. Nelson Omenugha, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Youth Reformation, confirmed that the pardon was announced directly by Governor Soludo during an official oversight visit to the correctional facility. Omenugha lauded the administration’s approach, emphasizing that the decision reflects a commitment to second chances, civic redemption, and steering young people away from societal vices.
