Sheeran Faces Solo Philly Show Amid Tour Fallout

Ed Sheeran takes the stage alone at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia tonight for the first time since a pro-Palestinian stance by opening act Macklemore triggered a cascade of walkouts, venue objections and public scrutiny of the British superstar’s long-held apolitical image.

The “Shape of You” singer’s Loop Tour resumes Saturday evening after rapper Macklemore was removed from remaining U.S. dates earlier this week. Messina Touring Group, the promoter, said multiple stadium operators had made clear they would not host shows with Macklemore on the bill following his onstage remarks at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on September 4 and 5.

During those performances Macklemore declared “Free Palestine,” performed his protest track “Hind’s Hall,” and displayed images related to the conflict in Gaza.

Sheeran has repeatedly insisted the decision was not his. In an Instagram statement he said he was “appalled by the conflict between Israel and Palestine,” described the suffering on both sides as “a human tragedy,” and stressed that “Macklemore coming off tour was the promoter’s decision, it was not mine.” He added that he had spoken with venue owners, including New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, in an effort to find a compromise, but the venues’ and promoter’s position remained final. “I am not complicit,” Sheeran wrote. “Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn’t mean I don’t have them, and it doesn’t mean I don’t care.” He also noted that audiences at his concerts “do not expect a political forum.”

Macklemore, for his part, said Sheeran told him Kraft had indicated the rapper would not be allowed to perform at Gillette Stadium and had coordinated with other stadium owners. Kraft confirmed he barred Macklemore from his venue, citing the comments and what he described as a broader history of rhetoric he considered offensive to the Jewish community.

Within days, the remaining support acts quit in solidarity. Finneas (Billie Eilish’s brother and collaborator), Danish band Lukas Graham, Irish singer-songwriter Aaron Rowe and Irish folk band Beoga—who had been performing with Sheeran during parts of his set—all withdrew.

Finneas stated that “artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed.” No replacement openers have been announced for Philadelphia or subsequent dates.

The Philadelphia concert, originally scheduled to start earlier to accommodate support acts, has been pushed back to 8 p.m. local time. Doors open earlier, and parking lots open in the afternoon. Ticket prices on the secondary market have fallen sharply in recent days—some of the cheapest tickets dropping by nearly half—though industry trackers note such declines are common as event day approaches and not solely attributable to the controversy. Availability has increased.

Pro-Palestinian groups including the Philly Palestine Coalition and Shut Down D&Z plan a rally near the stadium beginning at 4:30 p.m., framing the demonstration as a response to what they call the silencing of advocacy for Gaza. Philadelphia police have said they will maintain an appropriate presence to protect concertgoers, staff and nearby residents, coordinating with venue operators. Civil-rights organization CAIR-Philadelphia has also written to stadium operators seeking clarity on who decided Macklemore could not appear at the Linc.

In a further development, Macklemore announced he would donate the full $1 million of his net earnings from the Loop Tour dates he did play to six organizations supporting Palestinians, including the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, HEAL Palestine, Gaza Soup Kitchen, Medical Aid for Palestinians, UNRWA USA and Anera. He invited Kraft to match the sum. Kraft responded that Sheeran had already asked him to commit $2 million to match a donation of Sheeran’s own for humanitarian aid in the region; details of recipients have not been fully specified.

The episode has placed Sheeran, long known for keeping politics off his professional platform, at the center of a debate that has divided fans, artists and industry observers. Some view the removals as necessary to keep the focus on music and avoid alienating audiences or venue partners. Others see them as evidence that commercial interests can override free expression on major stages. With no new support acts announced and the tour continuing through November, tonight’s solo performance in Philadelphia will be closely watched as a test of whether Sheeran’s carefully maintained neutrality can weather the storm.
