Faith, Fame & Forever: Patti Boulaye’s Miracle Marriage Hits 50

British-Nigerian entertainer Patti Boulaye OBE is celebrating a landmark wedding anniversary with her husband Stephen Komlosy by combining quiet reflection on a life of faith with the imminent release of new music.

The couple marked the anniversary of their registry office wedding this week in a recording studio, racing to meet a deadline for Boulaye’s forthcoming gospel album. The first single from the project, “You Are My Champion,” is due for official release imminently. “It can only be God,” Boulaye has written of the timing.

Born Patricia Ngozi Ebigwei in 1954 in mid-western Nigeria, Boulaye arrived in London as a teenager intending a short stay with her sister. A chance mix-up during a bus ride—mistaking the queue for the West End musical Hair for Madame Tussauds—led to an audition and her professional stage debut. She had no prior showbusiness experience and found herself navigating an unfamiliar, often drug-influenced culture. Looking back, she regards the obstacles as divine training that strengthened body, mind and spirit.

Her greatest personal test came in matters of the heart. She met Stephen Komlosy, then twice married and father to four children. He proposed within hours. Boulaye deferred the decision to her mother and extended family, insisting that any man who married her must also embrace her relatives. The pair wed first in a registry office; a full Catholic church wedding seemed impossible under the rules of the time.

Ten years of prayer and perseverance followed.

A chance encounter with Bishop Howard Tripp led to catechism lessons for Komlosy and, ultimately, a special dispensation granted by Pope John Paul II. Their church wedding in 1988, conducted by senior clergy including the bishop himself, placed God “firmly in the middle” of the marriage. Boulaye has repeatedly described the dispensation as a miracle.

The road has not been smooth. Early press predictions gave the union little more than a year. Societal scrutiny, blended-family complexities and the ordinary storms of married life tested them repeatedly. Yet Boulaye insists the bond has only deepened. “I could not possibly love my Stephen more than I do now,” she wrote on the anniversary. “The way you have loved me and continue to do so greatly humbles me.”

Komlosy, now in his mid-eighties, remains her steadfast partner and best friend. The couple have two children together and a large extended family that includes stepchildren, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Boulaye, an OBE for her charitable work in Africa and a familiar face from West End stages, television and her long-running role as the face of Lux soap in Nigeria, continues to attribute every chapter of her story to faith.

“God’s ways are greater than our ways and His plan is perfect,” she reflected. “All things work together for good to those who love Him.” On this anniversary she urges other couples to treasure one another, especially through the stormy days, and simply to be still and know that He is God.
