Ondo Restricts Okada Routes Near Govt House to Ease Akure Traffic

The Ondo State Government has restricted commercial motorcycle (okada) operations on key routes around the Government House in Alagbaka, Akure, as part of intensified efforts to improve traffic flow and enforce road discipline in the state capital.

Special Adviser to Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Transport, Olumuyiwa Ogunyemi, announced the measures on Tuesday while briefing journalists. He said okada riders approaching from the Police Officers’ Mess route would be limited to approved termination points, while those coming through the First Bank axis in Alagbaka must end their operations around the Teaching Service Commission area. Tricycle and okada operators currently plying the Post Office corridor have also been directed to relocate.

Parking vehicles or displaying goods on roadsides and road shoulders has been prohibited. Officials stressed that dedicated bus stops provided by the government must be used properly.

Ogunyemi warned that motorists, okada riders and tricycle operators who disregard traffic lights or other regulations would face immediate arrest and prosecution. “We have noticed that okada riders and tricycle operators often fail to wait for the green signal before moving. Such behaviour will not be tolerated,” he said. “Anyone who violates traffic regulations will be arrested and prosecuted.”

The restrictions form part of broader traffic management reforms linked to ongoing infrastructure works in Akure, including a major flyover project along Oba Adesida Road. The government said public enlightenment campaigns have already been rolled out to prepare residents for the changes, and enforcement will now be stepped up.

Additional safety features such as zebra crossings and speed-limit signs are to be installed, particularly near schools and other sensitive locations. Authorities urged road users to adapt to modern traffic systems, obey road signs and cooperate so that the free movement of people and goods can be restored across the capital.

One report also framed the limited access around Government House as a proactive step to reduce the risk of criminal elements using motorcycles to approach the complex. The new rules take effect immediately.
