For years, Nigerians have watched Aliko Dangote build the country’s biggest refinery from the outside.
From today, they can begin owning a piece of it.The Dangote Refinery’s initial public offering opened on the Nigerian Exchange on Monday, offering 4.1 billion ordinary shares at ₦525 each.
The offer is expected to raise about ₦2.15 trillion if fully subscribed. It will remain open until October 13.
The minimum subscription is 10 shares, costing ₦5,250. That means the offer is not restricted to the country’s biggest investors.
Retail investors can participate alongside institutional and eligible African investors.
Dangote formally opened the offer by sounding the gong at the Nigerian Exchange in Lagos.
He described the transaction as the “People’s IPO”, saying members of the public now have an opportunity to participate in the ownership of the refinery.
The move marks a major change in the ownership story of the refinery.
What began as one man’s enormous industrial project is now entering Nigeria’s public capital market.
The timing is also significant.
The refinery has become one of the most closely watched industrial projects in Africa, with its operations already changing conversations around petroleum supply, imports and Nigeria’s downstream oil industry.
Dangote said the group plans further listings and expects its market capitalisation to reach at least $350 billion by 2030.
He also said the refinery could list outside Africa within the next three to four years.
For ordinary Nigerians, however, the biggest question is simpler:Is this an opportunity to build wealth, or simply another expensive investment that looks attractive because of the Dangote name?
That is where the real story begins.
Buying shares does not guarantee profit. Investors still need to consider the offer terms, the company’s performance, market conditions and the risks attached to owning equities.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Dangote IPO is not merely another corporate fundraising exercise.
It is a test of whether Nigeria’s capital market can turn millions of people from spectators of the country’s biggest businesses into actual shareholders.
