Nollywood actress Mo Bimpe has responded to social media backlash following a viral video showing her leaning on colleague Jide Awobona’s shoulder, dismissing speculation about her marriage and insisting that her husband, Lateef Adedimeji, is a secure man who does not feel threatened by normal interactions.

A Viral Moment Sparks Debate

At the September 2, 2026 premiere of A Mama Deola Wedding Story in Lagos, Nollywood actress Mo Bimpe was seated between her husband, Lateef Adedimeji, and her colleague, Jide Awobona.

A video clip from the event showed her leaning on Awobona’s shoulder while looking at something on her phone.

The clip quickly went viral, and social media users began analysing the interaction, with some suggesting that Lateef looked uncomfortable and questioning the appropriateness of Mo Bimpe’s behaviour.

The Backlash

The criticism was swift and sharp. Some users suggested that Mo Bimpe had crossed a boundary, while others speculated about the state of her marriage.

The discourse reflected a broader cultural tendency to police women’s behaviour, particularly in the context of marriage.

Mo Bimpe’s Response

On Sunday, Mo Bimpe addressed the criticism on her Instagram story. Her response was direct, clear and unapologetic.

“Not every marriage is built on fear, insecurity, and constant monitoring,” she said. “Some marriages are built on trust, friendship, respect, and confidence” .She added:

“The fact that so many of you found that interaction strange says more about the relationships you’re used to than it does about mine” .”Not every marriage is toxic, there are still healthy marriages but I understand if you can’t relate,” she said.

“My husband is a secure man, a brief conversation with a family friend does not threaten our marriage, or require anyone’s concern” .

The Secure Man Framework

Mo Bimpe’s response is notable for its framing of her husband as a “secure man.”

In psychological terms, “security” in a relationship refers to a sense of trust, confidence and emotional safety. A secure partner does not feel threatened by normal interactions, and does not need to control their partner’s behaviour.

By describing her husband as secure, Mo Bimpe is implicitly criticising the insecurity of those who questioned her marriage. She is also challenging the cultural assumption that women should be constantly monitored and controlled in relationships.

The Double Standard

The backlash against Mo Bimpe reflects a broader double standard in how men and women are judged in relationships.

Men are often given more latitude in their interactions with others, while women are expected to be more circumspect.

In political science and sociology, this is known as “gender policing”, the enforcement of gendered expectations and norms. Women who deviate from these norms are often subjected to public scrutiny and criticism.

The Role of Social Media

The incident also highlights the role of social media in amplifying and distorting everyday interactions.

A brief moment at a movie premiere was turned into a national debate about marriage, boundaries and trust. In communication theory, this is known as “context collapse”, the phenomenon where social media collapses multiple audiences into one, making it difficult to communicate appropriately.

What might have been a private moment between friends became a public spectacle.

A Lesson for Nigerian Youths

This incident is a reminder that social media is not real life. The same people who scrutinise every interaction will never allow their own families to be subjected to such scrutiny. Their families are protected.

For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: do not let social media define your relationships.

Build relationships on trust, not suspicion. And never forget that a healthy relationship is built on mutual respect, not control
