Aliko Dangote has announced that the Dangote Refinery initial public offering will be open to ordinary Nigerians, including drivers, cooks, traders and managers, with a minimum subscription of 10 shares at N525 per share.
The IPO, which could raise up to N2.15 trillion, represents the largest public offering in African history.
A Landmark Moment for African Capital Markets
At the official signing ceremony for the Dangote Refinery IPO on Monday, Aliko Dangote made a declaration that could reshape Nigeria’s investment landscape.
“Drivers, cooks, traders, managers and everybody should be able to participate,” he said, emphasising the inclusive nature of the offering.
The IPO, which is expected to open within the next 10 to 12 days, will offer 4.1 billion ordinary shares at an offer price of N525 per share.
At this price, the transaction could raise up to N2.15 trillion, making it the largest IPO in African history.
The Minimum Subscription
The minimum subscription has been deliberately set at 10 shares, costing N5,250. This low threshold is designed to ensure that the offering is accessible to a broad spectrum of Nigerians, regardless of their income or social status.
“The opportunity should not be limited to wealthy investors and prominent Nigerians,” Dangote stressed.
The Strategic Rationale
The IPO is part of Dangote’s broader strategy to expand the refinery’s capacity and reduce Africa’s dependence on imported refined petroleum products.
The refinery, which has a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, has already reshaped Nigeria’s downstream market.
The transaction is also expected to catalyse significant intra-African capital flows and help pave the way towards a more integrated African capital market under the African Continental Free Trade Area.
The Underwriting Programme
The refinery has secured a $1 billion underwriting programme, comprising a completed and funded $600 million private placement and a further $400 million underwriting commitment.
The programme, structured by Marob Strategies and Consulting DIFC Ltd and Lilium Capital Group, reflects growing institutional appetite for large-scale African assets.
The Retail Opportunity
For millions of Nigerians who have traditionally remained outside the formal investment market, the IPO could mark a significant shift from being mere consumers of petroleum products to becoming shareholders in one of Africa’s largest refining projects.
The Dangote Vision
Dangote’s vision for the IPO goes beyond raising capital.
“We are trying to make sure the majority of our drivers, cooks, servants, managers, everybody, will have an opportunity to have a stake in this refinery,” he said.
This vision reflects a broader philosophy of “inclusive capitalism”, the idea that ordinary citizens should have the opportunity to participate in the wealth created by large-scale industrial projects.

The IPO represents a unique opportunity for retail investors to gain exposure to the downstream petroleum industry at a time when the Dangote Refinery is expanding its role in meeting domestic and international energy demand.
However, investors should carefully assess the company’s profitability, expansion plans, ownership structure and investment risks before subscribing.
The offer price of N525 is not a guaranteed return, and investors should consider the company’s debt and cash flow position.
A Lesson for Nigerian Youths
This IPO is a reminder that wealth creation is not reserved for the elite. The same people who have traditionally been excluded from the financial system now have an opportunity to own a stake in one of Africa’s largest industrial projects.
The same leaders who talk about economic empowerment will never allow their own children to be excluded from such opportunities.
For young Nigerians, the lesson is clear: invest in your future. The same people who spend their money on consumption will never allow their own children to miss out on wealth-building opportunities.
Learn about investing. Take advantage of opportunities. And never forget that financial literacy is the key to economic freedom.
