Tributes Flow for 19-Year-Old Taekwondo World Medallist Isabelle Sava

​The martial arts and academic communities are mourning the sudden loss of Isabelle Sava, a trailblazing taekwondo world medallist and university law student, who has died at the age of 19.

​Sava, a second-degree black belt and an aspiring commercial lawyer entering her second year at Queen Mary University of London, passed away unexpectedly in her sleep after suffering a cardiac arrest.

​Emergency services rushed to her East London residence following the medical emergency on August 17, with ambulance and air ambulance teams fighting desperately to resuscitate her. Despite their rigorous efforts, she could not be saved.

​Remembered as an exceptionally driven young woman, Sava balanced elite athletic performance with a rigorous academic schedule. Having dedicated over a decade to martial arts, she captured international attention in 2022 when she represented Team UK and earned a silver medal in sparring at the World Taekwondo Championships in the Netherlands.

​Alongside her athletic achievements, she was deeply embedded in campus life at Queen Mary, serving active roles in the Law Society, Commercial Awareness Society, and Student Advancement Society, while also writing for the Queen Mary Legal Advice Centre. Earlier this year, her legal scholarship was officially published by the university’s legal center—a rare and notable feat for an undergraduate.

​Family, friends, and organizations have flooded social media with tributes. The UK International Taekwon-Do Federation (UK ITF) remembered her as an absolute joy to train alongside, noting that her discipline, warmth, and perseverance left an indelible mark on everyone she met.

​As her parents, Laura and Ovi Sava, navigate what family friend Adriana Agache described as “every parent’s worst nightmare,” a community fundraising campaign has been launched to assist with memorial arrangements. An investigation into the tragedy remains ongoing.
